One of all the reason why I choose to continue my study at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning is because I am interested in the field of planning. The field of urban and regional planning or commonly called “Planology” is a field that multi-disciplinary of science in which there are several other disciplines that collaborate with each other, interrelated, and mutually support each other. And this is a unique of urban and regional planning. The existence of multi-disciplinary of sciences applied on practice in which the planning of regional development must consider many aspects. Not only the physical aspects, but also social, economic, cultural, and environment aspect.
I take the example of development planning of industrial park in a district. Physically, the areas are suitable for industrial park, in terms of land are not in cases of conflict and have enough land for industrial park. However, communities around the district must be considered in planning process, in this case is the social aspect. In this aspect planning process consider about the impact will be felt by people around when the land was used as the industrial park. This needs to be analyzed for the presence of the industrial area that can provide a welfare society by hiring them or by other ways. In addition, in economic terms is also worth considering. From view of economy we will know that the potential of the district can support development of industrial park or not. This needs to be considered to realize the industrial area that can make a major contribution to regional income so that it can increase the prosperity of the district. And one more thing to consider is how the development of industrial park can be integrated with the environment. Today, there are many industrial parks in several regions in Indonesia which do not pay attention to environmental aspects that result in damage and pollution. In the industrial area planning process needs to be done environmental impact assessment (AMDAL in Indonesian) in which the presence of such an analysis can reduce the likelihood of damage and environmental pollution arising from industrial activities. It must be done to realize the sustainability development.
From the example above can be concluded that in the planning process there are many things to consider. Starting from the physical aspect, social, economic, cultural, to environmental. The aspects are interrelated and support each other for the realization of planning goals to be achieved.
And because many aspects must be considered, the planning process involves many experts in the field of social, economic, environmental, etc. They work in a team with different scientific backgrounds but share a same vision. The role of a planner in this group is as a coordinator who directs how development planning will be done, and become container of aspirations that emerged from each of the experts involved in a team. The aspirations can be used as a material consideration in the planning process.
That is one of the reason that make me interested and chose to continue my studies in Urban and Regional planning, Faculty of Engineering, Gadjah Mada University. The existence of diversity of science and field in planning process provides benefits for me to be able to learn to science besides science planning. In addition, systems and work patterns of the planning profession that always give priority to teamwork to train myself how to work in a team well and be able to develop and practice leadership skills that I have.
